Program Overview

The MA in Pure Mathematics trains students in analytic thinking and the rigorous methods of mathematical proof, critical skills for a variety of career goals. Students are encouraged to join the Math Club, mathematical societies, and enter mathematical competitions.

Master of Arts (MA) in Pure Mathematics

Students must obtain 30 credits to complete the Master of Arts in Pure Mathematics.

The MA in Pure Mathematics is a 30-credit degree program. The coursework largely mirrors the first two years of a doctoral program in mathematics and comprises 10 courses (30 credits):

Core Curriculum (15 credits, 5 courses)

  • Algebra Core (2 of 3 courses)
  • Analysis Core (2 of 3 courses)
  • Geometry and Topology Core (1 of 2 courses)

Electives (15 credits, 5 courses)

  • Fifteen credits in mathematics and statistics to constitute a cohesive program. The student’s selection of elective courses must have advisor approval.

Comprehensive Examinations

  • Students must complete comprehensive examinations in four areas of mathematics during their final semester.

Language Examination

  • Students must exhibit a working knowledge of a foreign language by translating a mathematical passage into English.

The Department’s requirements are flexible. They are intended to encourage students without a prior specialization in mathematics to pursue a degree in mathematics.

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission.  Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution comparable in standard and content to a bachelor’s degree from Hunter College - College & University Transcripts
  • Minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0.
  • At least 24 credits in mathematics with a "B" average in the courses involved.
  • Official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test.*
  • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references.
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study. In reviewing applications, considerable importance is placed on the applicant’s interest in and commitment to advanced study and professional development.

*The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is currently waived for both the incoming Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 class.
