Program Overview

Doctor of Physical Therapy

Since the late 1960’s and the founding of the School of Health Sciences, Hunter College has provided excellence in physical therapy education and other health professions.

Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT)

Students must obtain a total of 132 credits to complete the Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree.

Coursework

The Physical Therapy curriculum covers a wide variety of related subjects including: anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pharamcology, neuroscience, kinesiology, and clinical skills.

Clinical Experience

In addition to coursework, you'll also complete supervised clinical internships in various healthcare settings. This allows you to gain practical experience applying your knowledge and skills to real-world patients.

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

Please carefully review the Department of Physical Therapy site to learn about the required prerequisites when applying for the DPT program.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Cumulative GPA should be at or above 3.30 to be seriously considered, with a science GPA above 3.2.
  • Official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test

Working with athletes to prevent, diagnose, and treat injuries and improve performance. Salary Range: $53,000 - $103,000+

Specializing in the treatment of cardiopulmonary conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and heart failure. Salary Range: $84,000 - $129,300

Focusing on the needs of older adults, promoting mobility, functional independence, and preventing falls. Salary range: $80,000 - $130,000

Managing complex wounds such as diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, and burns to promote healing and prevent infection. Salary Range: $84,600 - $129,300

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Hunter College may consider late applications on a rolling basis pending space is still available in the program.

The program starts in the Summer session. However, when completing the online application you need to select the Fall option as the potential start date. There is no Summer option in the online application system.

How to Apply

Students Educated Outside the US

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
  • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
