Undergraduate Summer Scholarship

Catch up, get ahead with a Summer Scholarship

If you plan to take classes at Hunter this summer, you may be eligible to receive an Undergraduate Summer Scholarship. Upon registering in Hunter College’s Summer Session, the scholarship awards up to $500 to continuing undergraduate students for enrollment and successful completion of one (1) summer class that counts toward your degree.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the Undergraduate Summer Scholarship, you must meet the following requirements:

  • File a 2025-2026 FAFSA
  • Currently in attendance at Hunter College as degree-seeking undergraduate student
  • Enroll in at least a 3-credit Hunter College Summer Session course that counts toward your degree
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress and good conduct standing
  • Show strong academic progress toward your degree

In addition to the above requirements, the accumulation of earned credits will be considered in the award process. Courses taken on e-Permit do not qualify towards scholarship eligibility. W and WU grades will result in a disqualification of scholarship funds.

How to Apply

If you satisfy the above requirements and would like to be considered for the Undergraduate Summer Scholarship, please complete the following steps as soon as possible:

  1. Complete your Student To-Do List as indicated on your CUNYfirst account.
  2. Enroll in a Hunter College Summer Session course that is required for your degree.
  3. Submit the Undergraduate Summer Scholarship Application.

Deadline and Notification

The 2025 Summer Scholarship application is now closed. Students selected to receive the scholarship will be notified beginning May 16, 2025.

Summer PELL

Year-Round Pell Grant

Summer Pell, known as the Year-Round Pell Grant provides up to 150 percent of your maximum Pell award for the academic year. If eligible, the additional Pell funds will enable you to enroll in Summer courses at reduced tuition or tuition-free so that you can earn your degree faster without accruing or increasing debt. Here's a few benefits of the Year-Round Pell Grant:

  • Earn more credits to graduate on time
  • Take required prerequisites to declare a specific Major
  • Meet the 30 valid credit requirement to maintain NYS Excelsior Scholarship eligibility

Students may be eligible for a summer Pell grant if there is remaining Pell eligibility. Eligible students will automatically be considered for the Pell grant award which will be posted to the student's CUNYfirst account in during the summer term.

Eligibility Requirements

The additional funds provided by the Year-Round Pell Grant do not require repayment. To be eligible for the Year-Round Pell Grant funds, you must:

  • Complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
  • Be eligible for a Pell Grant
  • Register for at least six (6) credits of appropriate summer classes (please see a financial aid representative for eligibility)
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements
  • Have Lifetime Pell Grant (LEU) eligibility remaining. You can check your remaining Pell eligibility on the Federal Student Aid website page, "Calculating Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility used."

The Three-Credit Option

You can also get started with a single three-credit course this Summer and still qualify for Year-Round Pell by enrolling at Hunter full-time in the Fall and Spring semesters. This can be a really great option for students looking to catch-up on their degree requirements and for those starting in the Fall who want to get a jump-start on their Hunter education.

Note: Students may only receive a maximum of 12 full-time semesters or 600%.

Summer TAP

Fund Your Summer Studies with TAP

If you meet certain requirements, the New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) can help cover the costs of your summer classes.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Register for a minimum of 6 contributory credits* for summer (combination of all credits for all summer sessions).
  • Under certain circumstances, a student can receive an award for summer study that is in addition to the regular annual award. Such additional awards for summer study are considered accelerated TAP.

To be eligible for an accelerated summer payment, students who received their first award in the 2006-07 academic year or any year thereafter must satisfy the following criteria in addition to the standard TAP eligibility requirements:

  • Be full-time in the prior spring term.
  • Earn 24 credits from the same institution in the prior two terms (3 credit equivalents in remedial study in each term are permitted as part of the total 24 credits, or 18 credits plus 6 credit equivalents); this requirement must be met each time an accelerated award is sought.
  • Enroll part-time for at least six but fewer than 12 semester hours applicable to the program of study for a half-time accelerated payment.
  • Enroll full-time for at least 12 credits applicable to the program of study for a full-time accelerated payment.

Summer TAP recipients will be awarded 18 months after the award has been certified as eligible.

*"Contributory credits" are courses and other academic activities that are recognized as creditable toward fulfilling the requirements for a specific degree.

How to Apply

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online
  2. Complete the TAP application through the "Optional feature — start your state application" link found on the "FAFSA Web Submission Confirmation" page, or you can apply at www.hesc.ny.gov after your FAFSA is processed.

Note: If you drop or withdraw from one or more of your summer classes, your TAP award may be cancelled. In those cases, students are expected to repay the outstanding tuition balance before registering for the fall semester. New York State aid programs do not pay for courses that students never attended, receiving a grade of "WN".
