Service Animal Policy & Procedures

About

As part of our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, our office has established the following process for verifying service animal approvals on campus.

Students registered with The Office of AccessABILITY who have approved service animals will have this information included on their accommodation card, which our office issues. This is a convenient way for students to present their accommodation cards to Public Safety officers as confirmation of their service animal approval at all locations within Hunter College campuses.

Students who have not registered with The Office of AccessABILITY, and do not wish to register, may still bring their service animal to campus. In these cases, Public Safety may ask a few appropriate questions to confirm the service animal’s status, following relevant policies and guidelines.

If you have any questions or need further clarification, please contact The Office of AccessABILITY at accessab@hunter.cuny.edu

Student Responsibilities

Students who bring service animals to campus must follow these guidelines to ensure a safe and supportive environment for everyone:
  • The animal must be leashed, harnessed, or tethered unless these devices interfere with its work. If not using a leash, the animal must always remain under voice or signal control.
  • The service animal must be well-behaved and not disruptive to others. Excessive barking, growling, or aggressive behavior may result in removal from campus spaces.
  • The student is responsible for the animal’s cleanliness, health, and well-being, including regular grooming and waste cleanup.
  • Service animals are allowed in all areas where students are permitted, but they must not block access or create safety hazards.
  • Registered students can present their accommodation card to Public Safety as confirmation of their service animal’s approval.
  • Students who are not registered with The Office of AccessABILITY may be asked appropriate questions by Public Safety to verify their service animal.
