Behavioral Response Team

About Us

The Behavioral Response Team (BRT), through effective coordination and communication across Hunter College, helps to maintain a productive learning and working environment, and promotes the health and safety of the student body and community. The Team provides support and assistance to students in crisis or distress, and manages behavior that is cause for concern.

The BRT promotes a culture of mutual support and collaboration and is a resource for all faculty, staff, and students. Our efforts focus on:

  • Identifying those students in need of assistance
  • Assessing and addressing distressed, disruptive, disturbed, dysregulated behavior
  • Promoting a culture of mutual support and collaboration
  • Supporting and providing resources to students who evidence emotional/behavioral disturbance
  • Centralizing Information/Tracking “red flags”
  • Eliminating fragmented intervention

BRT Referrals

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to utilize the BRT when they observe behavior by a student that concerns them. Examples of behavior appropriate for a BRT referral include:

  • Significant changes in mood, class attendance, or engagement
  • Verbal or written threats
  • Disruptive or erratic/disorganized behavior in class
  • Deterioration in quality or quantity of work
  • Expressions of hopelessness
  • Written work or communication containing troubling themes or references
  • Expressions of severe anxiety, irritability, hostility
  • Suicidal Ideation - If risk is imminent, contact Public Safety at 212-772-4444
How to Alert the BRT

To alert the BRT about a concern, please complete and submit the BRT Referral Form. Your submission will be reviewed by the team and, as this is a collaborative process, we will contact you to discuss the referral and may request additional information to help determine the appropriate intervention.
