France - Americans in Paris

Credits Offered: 3 credits

• Undergraduates: ENGL 386.01: Topics in British and American Literature (3 credits)
• Graduates: ENGL 775.01: Selected Studies in British and American Literature (3 credits)

Program Fee: $3,350* (estimate). The fee will include housing, cultural excursions and group activities (including overnight visit to Normandy), and international health and travel insurance.

*Tuition and airfare are not included in the program fee.

Travel: Students are responsible for arriving at their study abroad location by the first day of the program; this may mean flying the day before.

Payment Schedule: $350 application fee and deposit is due on or before March 31 of the program year. The program deposit is due after acceptance to the program has been confirmed via email by our office.

Program fee balance ($3,000; estimate) is due on or before April 14 of the program year. Payments must be made with certified check or money order. No cash, personal checks, or credit cards. Payments should be made at the Office of Education Abroad during office hours.

Students are responsible for meeting the payment deadline regardless of funding source, eg. Macaulay Opportunities Fund, scholarships, loans, or any other type of financial aid. Late fees will be applied to all delayed payments.

To go to Paris in an American frame of mind means following Mark Twain down the Champs Elysees, stopping by Procope (the world’s oldest café) with Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, exploring Montparnasse with Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin, discovering the Left Bank with Gertrude Stein and Richard Wright, finding Josephine Baker in the Panthéon, and so much more. Although this course will focus on four groups of American writers, The Lost Generation, the Beats, and Black writers of the 1920’s and post-World War II, we’ll also consider other artists, musicians, and filmmakers who similarly found in Paris a haven as well as inspiration for their art.

In addition to writing responses to the texts we read and view, students will keep travel journals of walks through neighborhoods like Montparnasse or the Marais; visits to museums and monuments; a boat tour on the Seine; and an excursion to the beaches of Normandy (site of the D-Day invasions), so important to the work of Ernest Hemingway, Martha Gellhorn, and others even now.

James Thurber once wrote that “the whole of Paris is a vast university of art, literature, and music. . . . It is worth anyone’s while to dally here for years.” Although this program lasts weeks, not years, exploring that “university” as fully as possible will help students discover what Paris has meant in the American artistic imagination and what it still might mean today.

This program is open to CUNY and non-CUNY students.

Prerequisites:

• Undergraduates: ENGL 220 or equivalent at home university
• Applicants must fulfill Hunter's general eligibility requirements along with any program-specific prerequisites or requirements

Housing: Student housing includes single-occupancy rooms with shared common spaces, such as bathrooms and kitchen. Student housing will have 24-hour security.

Syllabus: A complete syllabus will be provided in March of the program year.

Credits & Grades: Students in this program will receive both course credit and letter grades. Grades will count toward their Hunter GPA.
