Greece - Contemporary Lyric and Poetry Workshop

Location: Syros and Athens, Greece

Dates: June 23 - July 15, 2023

Credits Offered: 3-6 credits
Students may take one or both of the following courses:

• ENGL 31400 or 31600: Workshop in Poetry (3 credits)
• ENGL 25144: The Contemporary Lyric: Roots in/Revisions of the Greek Lyric and Epic Tradition (3 credits)

Application Deadlines: March 31, 2023. Please check back in September 2023 for 2024 deadlines.

Program Fee: $1,900 (estimate; to be confirmed by March 31, 2023) includes housing, breakfast, cultural and program excursions, transportation between Athens and Syros, and international health and travel insurance.

Tuition and airfare are not included in the program fee.

Travel: Students are responsible for arriving at their study abroad location by the first day of the program; this may mean flying the day before.

Payment Schedule: $350 application fee and deposit is due on or before April 7 of the program year. The program deposit is due after acceptance to the program has been confirmed via email by our office.

Program fee balance $1,550 (estimate) is due on or before April 21 of the program year. Payments must be made with certified check or money order. No cash, personal checks, or credit cards. Payments should be made at the Office of Education Abroad during office hours.

Students are responsible for meeting the payment deadline regardless of funding source: eg. Macaulay Opportunities Fund, scholarships, loans, or any other type of financial aid. Late fees will be applied to all delayed payments.

Financial Aid: Please be sure to meet with the Financial Aid Office to discuss your particular financial aid package.

Spend a summer on the Greek island of Syros, studying and writing poetry!

This three-week program will explore how the Aegean landscape was vital to the origin of lyric poetry, as seen through the work of ancient Greek poets Sappho and Homer. The Contemporary Lyric course will provide a wide-ranging and historically rich understanding of the literary, cultural, and historical context of the Greek lyric, as well as its influence on contemporary American and British lyric poetry.

In the Poetry Workshop course, students will produce their own creative writing, inspired by the history of the lyric, as well as the island’s beautiful setting.

Students may take one or both courses. Each course is worth 3 credits.

The program will include an overnight stay in Athens, Greece; cultural excursions to the Acropolis Museum and National Archeological Museum; poetry readings and guest lectures; and many opportunities to explore and be inspired by the local landscape and nature on the magical island of Syros, Greece.

Housing: Students will be housed in hotels, both in Athens and in Syros. Breakfast is included; students will be responsible for lunch and dinner. The program will host two group dinners at the beginning and end of the program.

Prerequisites:

• Undergraduates: ENGL 220 or equivalent at home university.
• Applicants must fulfill Hunter's general eligibility requirements along with any program-specific prerequisites or requirements.

Credits & Grades:* Students in this program will receive both course credit and letter grades. Grades will count toward their Hunter GPA.
