Italy - Central Mediterranean Archaeology

Program Fee: $2,400 (estimate) includes housing, meals, local transportation, excursions, books, and international health and travel insurance.

Tuition and airfare are not included in the program fee.

Travel: Students are responsible for arriving at their study abroad location by the first day of the program; this may mean flying the day before.

Payment Schedule: $350 application fee and deposit is due on or before March 20 of the program year. The program deposit is due after acceptance to the program has been confirmed via email by our office.

Program fee balance $2,050 (estimate) is due on or before April 7 of the program year. Payments must be made with certified check or money order. No cash, personal checks, or credit cards. Payments should be made at the Office of Education Abroad during office hours.

Students are responsible for meeting the payment deadline regardless of funding source: eg. Macaulay Opportunities Fund, scholarships, loans, or any other type of financial aid. Late fees will be applied to all delayed payments.

The Central Mediterranean Archaeology program takes places in two locations in Sicily: Stromboli, a volcanic island in the Aeolian Archipelago, and Cannatello, on the southern coast of Sicily, near Agrigento. They are among the best examples of the cultural developments in diachronic perspective. During the Bronze Age the Mediterranean vibrant connectivity is well expressed by Cannatello: a large fortified hub with imports from Cyprus, Crete, Malta and Sardinia.

Stromboli has been inhabited since prehistory (with a direct connection with the Aegean world) and again in Greek, Roman and Medieval phases showing remarkable human adaptability to this peculiar landscape.

Lipari is the main Aeolian center with an outstanding Archaeological Museum and sites.

This program is open to CUNY students who want to experience international and interdisciplinary fieldwork.

Students will work in teams with students and scholars from Italy and other countries. The experience of living and working with an international team will expose students to various landscapes, archaeological sites and methodologies.

During the four weeks of this archaeological field school, students will gain practical knowledge of the most innovative techniques and methods on site (topography, GIS, geography, volcanology, stratigraphy, environment, geophysics, geoarchaeology, chronology, anthropology, conservation) and in the laboratory (classification, drawing, conservation, archaeometry, archaeological database).

There will be guided tours to several other sites and museums in the surrounding areas, such as the spectacular Temple Valley at Agrigento, and other archaeological sites and museums in the Agrigento, Milazzo and Aeolian areas.

Housing and Meals: Students will be housed in apartments with meals provided.

Prerequisites: Applicants must also fulfill Hunter's general eligibility requirements along with any program-specific requirements.

Credits & Grades: Students in this program will receive both course credit and letter grades. Grades will count toward their Hunter GPA.
