Registration Issues

Holds on Your Record

A negative service indicator (a small red crossed out circle) or hold on your record means there is an issue that requires you to make a correction. Make sure all holds are cleared or you will be unable to register.

To view any holds on your record, log into your CUNYfirst account, then go to the Student Center in the Self Service area and you will see them listed in the upper right corner under Holds. Select Details to determine the academic or administrative office that issued the hold on your record. Reconcile the hold by contacting the issuing office.

If you see holds on your record from other CUNY colleges, you will not be prohibited by the system from registering for classes at Hunter College.

Academic Probation or Dismissal

If your GPA falls below 2.0, you may be placed on academic probation, or dismissed from Hunter. If an undergraduate student does not maintain a 2.0 GPA, they are automatically placed on academic probation. A sliding minimum GPA must be maintained during the probationary period. If the minimum GPA is not maintained, students are automatically dismissed from the College.

Undergraduates should contact the Office of Advising. For information on programs to assist students on academic probation, or on the probation/dismissal process, contact Center for Student Achievement at cfsa@hunter.cuny.edu.

Graduate matriculated and non-matriculated students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 to remain at Hunter College. Students whose grades fall below this standard are required to raise their GPAs to at least 3.0 within one semester. After the posting of grades, the registrar’s office will notify graduate advisers of students whose GPAs fall below 3.0. Those students will receive warning notices that they have one probationary semester in which to raise their GPAs. Students who fail to raise their averages sufficiently will be dropped from their programs. Graduate students should contact their academic school dean and review Hunter’s academic dismissal policy.

Probation and dismissal occur at the end of each fall and spring semester.
