Profile

Dr. Eng is active in the Chinatown community.  She provides frequent workshops for parents of children with disabilities.  She serves as a resource for parents who have adopted children from China.  Being fluent in Cantonese, Toisanese and Mandarin have served her well and, in addition to having grown up in Chinatown all afford her the sort of backdrop that is useful in her service to our community. She has been working with Chinese-Americans who present with a range of different communication disorders in a wide range of settings.  These include acute care settings, school-based programs as well as in university settings.  She is currently an Associate Professor at Hunter College CUNY and is on the doctoral faculty at the Graduate School and University Center of CUNY.  Her areas of research interest include language learning and language loss in children/adults who are exposed to more than one language; reading ability and disability in biscript readers; neurogenic language loss in bilingual populations and language attrition in internationally adopted children. She has presented lectures both nationally as well as internationally.  Most recently, she was in Utrecht, NL, speaking about the language deficits found in Chinese speaking children with specific language impairment.  Dr. Eng is very active in her profession.  She has served on the Multicultural Issues Board for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and as a Legislative Councilor, representing New York State for the Association.  She has also served on the Executive Board for the New York State Speech, Language and Hearing Association for many terms.
