COURSE DESCRIPTION
Through a selection of plays and performance pieces, students will analyze the “burning issues” about race, class, gender and sexuality, and how these are embodied in performance through a number of dramatic forms and theatrical techniques.
Past and contemporary playwrights and performance artists include Susan Glaspell, Eve Ensler, Suzi-Lori Parks, Yellow Rage, Sarah Jones, Staceyann Chin, Betty Shamieh, Kia Corthron, The Guerrilla Girls, Split Britches, Susana York and the WOW Café, Genny Lim, Five Lesbian Brothers, Kate Bornstein, Carmen Rivera, Lynn Nottage and others.
Students will also engage in theater exercises, improvs and short scene work.
NO formal theater experience is necessary to take this course.
