Gender, Violence and Theater Activism

This course is open to all students interested in the intersections of theater, art, and activism—can theater and performance be used as powerful tools for social justice? How so? We will read selections from the main theatrical works of Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues, The Good Body, A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer); and learn about other theatrical works used as a tool for activism against violence (for instance, The Lysistrata Project, Girl Be Heard, The Medea Project, etc).

In addition, we will read a selection of scholarly writing addressing theater for social justice, and the racial, class, & sexual dimensions of gender violence. Finally, we’ll review VAWA, CEDAW, ENDA, and other documents addressing gender-based violence.

COURSE REQ—ENGLISH 120. No formal theater experience is necessary.
