The Joan H. Tisch Community Health Prize honors individuals and not-for-profit organizations for distinguished accomplishment in the field of urban public health. Made possible by support from the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, the Prize is a tribute to the late Joan H. Tisch in recognition of her lifelong humanitarian activism in health care and social services in New York City.

About the Individual Honorees

Helen Arteaga-Landaverde is the CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/ Elmhurst. She embodies the mission of the public health system to deliver equitable health care to all New Yorkers and the values of compassion, integrity, and respect for all. During her tenure at Elmhurst Hospital, she worked closely with the clinical team to oversee an unprecedented COVID-19 testing and vaccination program throughout multiple waves of the pandemic. She has guided the institution’s recovery as it moves into a post-pandemic future by expanding access to care, launching new specialty services, and expanding the hospital’s role in addressing social determinants of health.

Theodore “Ted” Long, MD, MHS, is senior vice president of Ambulatory Care and Population Health at New York City Health + Hospitals, the largest public health care system in the U.S. He is also the immediate former executive director of the NYC Test & Treat Corps, the City’s comprehensive effort to provide accessible, no-cost COVID-19 testing, support those infected or exposed to the virus with quarantine and isolation resources, and provide connections to treatment for eligible New Yorkers. Dr. Long oversees Population Health and supervises the NYC Care program, which provides universal access to care for all New Yorkers. Additionally, he leads operations for the Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers (HERRCs) for asylum seekers coming into NYC, as well as the citywide Arrival Center.

About the Organizational Honoree

Mixteca is a community-based organization located in Sunset Park. Established in 2000, Mixteca addresses critical needs in health, education, social and legal issues facing the burgeoning Mexican and Latin American immigrant community in Brooklyn. Mixteca is well-positioned to serve this historically marginalized population. As the only Spanish-speaking organization in Brooklyn dedicated to providing their key services to asylum seekers, Mixteca’s staff and volunteers provide linguistically- and culturally-specific support in Spanish and four Indigenous languages. Especially since 2023, Mixteca has mobilized to meet the overwhelming demand for resources that resulted from the surge of border crossings. Ever since, Mixteca has been at the forefront of supporting thousands of newly arrived asylum-seekers from across Latin America, ensuring that undocumented immigrants and newly arrived asylum-seekers know their rights and gain access to essential resources.
