Featuring readings and reflections from poets, novelists, essayists, and memoirists including Marina Budhos, Nancy Bulalacao, Christina Chiu, Curtis Chin, Luis Francia, Lisa Ko, Marie G. Lee, Ed Lin, Vina and Manuel D. Orden, Bino Realuyo, Purvi Shah, Monique Truong, Eileen Tabios, and Barbara Tran.

The early 90’s were an exciting time for Asian American creativity in New York City. While Hunter College was establishing its Asian American Studies program uptown, a diverse group of Asian American poets and writers were creating a vibrant community space in the East Village called the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. Housed in a basement underneath a Gap store, the organization flourished with its own reading series and open mic. Come join us for a special reading with many of the writers who helped make the St. Marks space so special. Vivian Louie, director of the Asian American Studies Program & Center at Hunter College, will discuss the growth of the AAPI population in the nation and in NYC that set the stage for the formation of the AAWW and AAS at Hunter College.

This event is presented by the Asian American Writers’ Workshop (AAWW) in partnership with the Asian American Studies Program & Center at Hunter College and the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.
