Please join us at Roosevelt House for a screening of Hot to Trot, a documentary film about same-sex competitive ballroom dance. The documentary goes inside this fascinating but little-known world and follows a small international cast of four men and women, on and off the dance floor, over a four-year period. For these individuals, dance is a form of personal power and political engagement that simultaneously shapes their identities and helps them overcome personal challenges. They are not mere emblems of LGBTQ politics—they are living them. An immersive character study and an idiosyncratic attack on bigotry, this rousing, powerful story unfurls with the rhythms and energy of compelling music and dramatic cinema. The screening will be followed by a discussion with director and producer Gail Freedman; Director of Hunter’s LGBTQ Public Policy Center, Charles Kaiser; and Nikolai Shpakov, a professional dancer and one of the main characters in the film.
“This documentary…is just as much about life & gender politics as it is about dance. Shows how competitive dance is enhanced, not diminished, by same-sex partnering.”— The New York Times
