Promoting Civil Discourse & Intellectual Dialogue Series

Forum on Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech: What Does it Mean for the Hunter Community?

The panel discussion will cover two important and distinct subjects of interest to the Hunter community.  The session will begin with a discussion of the purposes, source of rights, and contours of academic freedom for faculty and other academic employees.  It will continue with an examination of the scope of the First Amendment and statutory protections for speech, association, and assembly by staff, faculty, administrators and students.  During the discussion, the panelists will address the application of those principles to the current controversies surrounding campus protests.  The session will conclude with a period for questions and answers.
