POSITION DETAILS
Advising for the Psychology Department presents an unusually complex challenge given the number of its majors and faculty, breadth of discipline (from social to biological), the hierarchical structure of the curriculum, and the diversity of disciplinary and career paths.
Reporting directly to the Department Chair, the Psychology Advising Specialist provides program and advisement support for its students, managing all administrative aspects of a student’s academic career, including progress standards, dismissals and degree audit processing, as well as maintaining databases for student awards.
Additional responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Provides support for faculty in program coordination, curricular development, and syllabi compliance with standards.
- Maintain records and files in accordance with state and college regulations.
- Ensures accurate and timely communication to students around college, program and degree requirements.
- Coordinates and contributes materials for student events including orientations and workshops, developing informational materials, giving presentations, and working with individual students on a case-by-case basis.
- Identifies and recommends outstanding graduating seniors and student award winners to recommend for inclusion to the commencement program.
- Liaises with multiple offices and departments to help resolve student issues.
- Serves on departmental grade appeals committee.
- Coordinate faculty oversight of adjunct instruction, development, and support.
- Works with departmental scheduling staff on course scheduling to ensure accuracy of CUNYfirst listings.
- Attends any relevant training sessions and events.
- Supervises degree audits and course enrollments and overtallies
- May occasionally offer general academic advisement to students in degree and certificate programs.
- Oversees and supervise advising staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required.
- Four years’ experience in a higher education setting, preferably in advising, counseling, or a similar field desired.
- A familiarity with and broad knowledge of the field of psychology.
- Good judgement and responsiveness in working with a broad range of student needs and background.
- Experience in working with social media.
- Exceptional organizational, project management, and facilitation skills, including solid writing and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High aptitude to multitask effectively, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and work in a precise and accurate manner.
- Ability to work with large volumes of data to analyze and run reports from centralized database.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends (when needed) during peak operations periods.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat, and aptitude to learn new systems as needed.
- Experience with CUNYfirst is preferred and a willingness to learn and work with multiple systems is essential.

- Ensures students are provided with consistent, accurate, and prompt advising services, coordinating with academic departments

- Develops orientation programs to engage and retain students and instructs students, faculty and staff on use of advising technologies
- Conducts assessments to strengthen advisement programs
- Organizes and facilitates training for faculty advisors
- Develops print and online communication materials
- May supervise office operations and budget
- Performs related duties as assigned.
