The thesis film of a recent Hunter Integrated Media Art graduate has been named a Vimeo Staff Pick — a big deal in the film world, where exposure on the famed video aggregator can supercharge a career.
The short film, Dark Moon, by Kate Lyn Matthews MFA ’22 has garnered favorable notices at the Sun Valley Newport Beach, and New York Shorts film festivals, among others. Matthews also received the prestigious Princess Grace Award with the Wendy Ferguson Film Honor of Distinction in 2022.
“Like Kate, many of our talented Hunter IMA grads excel in their chosen fields,” said Andrew Lund, associate professor and director of Hunter’s Integrated Media Arts MFA Program. “It’s a tribute to their skills and vision, as well as the intense training, the constructive critiques, and the community comradery they gain in the program. I congratulate Kate on this well-deserved recognition.”
Dark Moon is a well-acted, moody drama about a middle-aged woman’s relationship with her father, who has dementia. His unpredictable behavior and the appearance in their lives of a female stranger scramble the power dynamics of the father-daughter relationship. Mathews’s next release is a feature documentary, Roleplay, about college students who use theater to confront sexual abuse on campus.
The MFA Program in Integrated Media Arts offers advanced studies in interdisciplinary storytelling and documentary arts, educating multi-disciplinary, socially engaged media makers in a diverse range of skills across the media landscape. Working with faculty from film, emerging media, and journalism backgrounds, students learn to conceptualize, create and distribute innovative, politically and socially engaged expression using contemporary media technologies.
