Hunter Celebrates Our Military Veterans

Hunter Student Veterans: Godfred Essim, Steven Quintana, and Thomas Joy

For many service members, a college education can be a crucial transition from military to civilian life, and Hunter is honored to welcome veterans and their families as they take new steps in their professional and academic journeys. This Veterans Day, we celebrate and salute all those who have served, especially those who are part of the Hunter family.

This year, 20 student-veterans from Hunter College were acknowledged for their outstanding academic performance at the annual CUNY Veteran Academic Awards Breakfast. The awards, given each year since 2013, recognize CUNY student-veterans who have completed at least 90 credits with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Many student-veterans at Hunter seek to continue their inspiring work through fields of public service, while others see their college experience as a moment to change gears and expand their horizons into new areas, like the arts or science. Whatever our student-veterans choose to pursue, Hunter is committed to providing them with the necessary resources, including a dedicated team of advisors and an on-campus space specifically dedicated to the student-veteran population.

The Hunter College Student Veteran Resource Center offers a space for student-veterans and their families to connect and take advantage of educational and professional development opportunities geared specifically to their needs. Recently, the Center hosted a special workshop for student-veterans to develop presentation skills, cultivating the art of telling their own personal stories. The Center also offers assistance with navigating the complex system of VA benefits, professional development, and internship opportunities, and it acts as a direct liaison to Project for Return and Opportunity in Veterans Education (PROVE), a Silberman School of Social Work program to serve student-veterans on CUNY campuses.

Hunter College is dedicated to supporting the academic and personal success of our student-veterans, from acceptance through graduation, and to integrating our student-veterans fully into our college community. Hunter is proud to be a home to so many brave men and women who have served our nation.

To all military members, past and present, we offer our gratitude.
