Dr. Thomas Schmidt-Glenewinkel

The Hunter College community mourns the loss of our longtime colleague Dr. Thomas Schmidt-Glenewinkel, who passed away on Friday June 3. In his nearly four decades at Hunter, he was a stalwart instructor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He also offered recurring special topics courses in his research area, which most recently was molecular mechanisms of aging, utilizing Drosophila (fruit flies) as a model organism.  During his years as our principal graduate advisor, the department benefited greatly from his efforts to recruit excellent graduate students to our research enterprise.

In the late 1980’s, he became an early advocate of the Ethernet within the multi-departmental Center for the Study of Gene Structure and Function (Gene Center) at Hunter.  Over the years, he was a significant contributor to the development of the Gene Center’s intranet, which remains in operation today. He will be greatly missed.

The family has advised that those wishing to make donations in Thomas’s memory are invited to send them in his name to the American Heart Association.
