Peter Carey

Peter Carey, Distinguished Lecturer and Executive Director of Hunter’s Creative Writing MFA Program, was named a “2021 Great Immigrant” by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Called “one of the world’s leading novelists,” and frequently cited as Australia’s next contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature, Carey is the author of over a dozen novels, as well as short stories, works of nonfiction and screenplays. He is among only five writers who have won the Booker Prize twice, first for Oscar and Lucinda and then for True History of the Kelly Gang.

Congratulations to @Hunter_College Prof/MFA Creative Writing Program Director Peter Carey on being named a 2021 Great Immigrant by the @CarnegieCorp!

— President J. Raab (@HunterPresident) June 30, 2021

Every Fourth of July, the Carnegie Corporation recognizes an extraordinary group of immigrants who have made notable contributions to the progress of American society. Carey joins other notable honorees such as actress Helen Mirren and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, and he is the second Hunter faculty member to be honored with this distinction in recent years, following Hunter alumnus and Distinguished Professor Nari Ward ’89, who received the honor in 2019.
