Project Summary:

About one-third of gun-related deaths among adolescents in the United States are due to suicide. Our program of research seeks to understand what makes adolescents think about suicide, the characteristics of their suicidal thoughts that predict risk of making a future suicide attempt, and how to modify the thinking processes that give rise to suicide ideation and attempts. Short-term goals of this award are to better understand the precipitants of adolescent suicide ideation, patterns of suicidal thoughts, and outcomes following medical care among adolescents. Long-term goals of this award are to improve existing assessments of adolescent suicide risk, including adaptation of our measures for Spanish-speaking populations; to better address the social, interpersonal, and cultural context in which adolescent suicidal behavior occurs; and to identify gaps in systems of care to improve outcomes among adolescents at risk of future self-inflicted injury.
