Hunter’s Department of Physical Therapy was the subject of an October 26, 2014 article on its groundbreaking scoliosis therapy.
The department is one of three centers in the country using a therapy called the Schroth method to reverse the damage caused by idiopathic adolescent scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine in adolescents, according to the article, which appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer. The method, developed nearly 100 years ago and used in Europe for decades, is available in only a few places in this country. It involves posture correction, resistance training and breathing exercises to stabilize the spine.
The Hunter course on the Schroth method, first offered in 2012, has now certified more than 60 therapists, said Gary Krasilovsky, chair of the Department of Physical Therapy.
