Statement From President Raab on Juneteenth

June 17, 2021

For the first time in our history, our nation will celebrate Juneteenth as a federal holiday on June 18, 2021. This historical date signifies the official end of slavery in the United States. The signing of the Emancipation Proclamation remains one of the most significant acts in American history.

It is important to think about what Juneteenth means to us here at Hunter College. Certainly, it is a time for joy and celebration. But given some of the horrific experiences of the past year, we must also give thought to the impact of brutality, racism and discrimination on our communities. At Hunter, we remain focused on advancing racial equity.

A part of the commemoration of Juneteenth is the act of remembering. Remembering those who fought for freedom, those who died for freedom, and those who never lost sight of the fact that they deserved to be free. It is with great joy, gratitude and solemn reverence that we remember and celebrate Juneteenth today.
