Carmelina Cartei’s (she/her) background is in applied/developmental theater, feminist theater, and theater-based activism. She studied with playwright and educator Augusto Boal on a regular basis for over ten years and was co-founder of the Theater of the Oppressed Lab in New York City. She is currently an active member of three activist bands (including Fogo Azul NYC, Rude Mechanical Orchestra, and Tin Horn Uprising) that use music and creativity to empower their members and support human rights causes in the tri-state area. Her passion for environmental justice leads her to be involved with Earth Celebrations, and its annual Ecological City Pageant that uses the arts as an organizing tool and to celebrate successful climate solutions implemented in the Lower East Side. She recently finished an M.A. degree in Labor Studies from CUNY and is ABD in the PhD Theater program at the Graduate Center (CUNY).
