Dr. Collins’s clinical experience includes 10 years of inpatient & outpatient neurological rehabilitation followed by more than 20 years of practice in the outpatient orthopedic setting focusing on manual treatment approaches.
Dr. Collins has been a Board Certified Specialist in neurological physical therapy since 2003 and completed a 6-month Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) Post-Graduate Residency at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo, CA in 2000, focusing on manual skills for treatment of the orthopedic and neurologically involved clients. In 2012 she became a Certified Functional Manual TherapistTM (CFMT), one of less than 300 in the US.
Before assuming the position of Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at Hunter College, Dr. Collins was a tenured faculty of Physical Therapy at Long Island University where she also served as Interim Director. Other roles she has held include Associate Director of the Division of Physical Therapy, and Clinic Director of the LIU Center for Physical Rehabilitation from its inception in 1996 until 2007.
Witnessing the changes that physical therapy has made in her patients’ lives across 30+ years of clinical practice, along with the personal and professional growth of her students as they traverse the path from academic learning to clinical learning and the practice of physical therapy have been constant motivators in Dr. Collins’s career.
Her research interests include functional manual therapy, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, the role of the pelvis in gait, and neurological therapy.
