Dr. Howard Chernick is a professor emeritus of economics at Hunter College focusing on public finance and the economics of tax and spending.
Dr. Chernick is deeply committed to his research on state and local taxation and economic fairness, which primarily focuses on assessing the economic impact on states of progressive taxation and expenditure policies as well as measuring the fiscal health of cities. He collaborates regularly on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on city finances, commercial real estate and property taxes. Dr. Chernick's research has been widely cited in prestigious publications such as The New York Times, Newsday, The Boston Globe and the Morning Consult.
Dr. Chernick's past experience includes testifying before the New York City Council and serving as an adviser to domestic and international organizations, including the NYC Independent Budget Office, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Fiscal and Financial Commission of the Republic of South Africa.
In 2015, Dr. Chernick was a visiting Fulbright scholar at ENS Cachan, Paris, and he frequently engages with scholars in France and Italy on subjects of common interest. He is fluent in French and has a working knowledge of Italian.
In addition to his work at Hunter College, he currently serves as an associate of the Institute for Research on Poverty at the University of Wisconsin.
Dr. Chernick holds a BA from John Hopkins University and a PhD in economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
