Profile

Dr. Lotfi Mateo Bassa is the assistant director of the McNair Scholars Program at Hunter College. He has nearly a decade of experience in teaching, training, higher education, coordinating academic and student support, as well as managing summer and postbaccalaureate research programs.

As assistant director of the McNair Scholars Program, Dr. Bassa is responsible for managing all program activities, including planning and conducting programs and workshops that aid students in research projects and scholarly activities and help students with graduate school readiness. He also offers counseling in the academic, professional and personal skills necessary for preparing undergraduate students in applying and entering graduate school.

Prior to joining Hunter College, Dr. Bassa worked with the NEAGEP / IMSD / Postbaccalaureate Research Education (PREP) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a program assistant, helping students navigate and prepare for graduate education. He also served as a program manager for Baystate Springfield Educational Partnership (BSEP) and PVLSI, where he designed a six-week course and research training program for rising inner-city seniors from Springfield high schools that aimed to develop critical thinking and introduce students to biomedical research.

Dr. Bassa received his AS in Biology from Essex County College, Newark, NJ in 2007. His BS in Biology from Montclair State University in 2009 and obtained his PhD in Animal Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2016.
