Robert Seltzer

Professor of Jewish History, Emeritus

Robert Seltzer has authored numerous books including Simon Dubnow’s New Judaism: Diaspora Nationalism and the World History of the Jews and Jewish People, Jewish Thought: The Jewish Experience in History.

Profile

Robert Seltzer is professor of history at Hunter College and the Graduate School of CUNY. He teaches courses in Jewish history, world history, and European intellectual history.

Most recently, Mr. Seltzer is the author of Simon Dubnow’s New Judaism: Diaspora Nationalism and the World History of the Jews (Brill, 2014). His Jewish People, Jewish Thought: The Jewish Experience in History is an overview of Jewish life and ideas from biblical times to the present. He is editor of Judaism: A People and Its History and of Religions of Antiquity and co-editor of The American Judaism of Mordecai M. Kaplan and of The Americanization of the Jews. He was Judaica editor of the first edition of the Encyclopedia of Religion, a principal consultant for the Museum of Jewish Heritage-New York Holocaust Memorial’s permanent exhibit, and is a member of the Education Committee of the Museum. He has been general editor of three publication series: "Reappraisals in Jewish Social and Intellectual History", "Essential Papers in Jewish Studies", and “Hunter College Occasional Papers in Jewish Studies.” He was advisor for the National Educational Television series Heritage: Civilization and the Jews and consultant for the expanded DVD version of Heritage.

Mr. Seltzer is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Yale University, the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and Columbia University. He was acting cean of Social Sciences at Hunter from 1996 to 1998. In April 2000 he received the Hunter College Presidential Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship. He is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and has served as chair of the Executive Committee of the Board of Delegates of the American Council of Learned Societies and as president of the Association for Jewish Studies.
