Steven Ross is a professor in the Department of Philosophy. His research focuses on moral philosophy, moral realism, philosophy of mind, aesthetics, political philosophy, contemporary analytic philosophy, issues in law and public policy.

Profile

Steven Ross received his BA with honors in philosophy from Brandeis University and the University of Edinburgh in 1974.  In 1975, he pursued an M.Phil degree in philosophy at University College of London, working in aesthetics with Profs. Richard Wollheim and Roger Scruton.  He left University College London to enter the doctoral program in philosophy at Harvard University in 1975, receiving his Ph.D. in philosophy in 1980.

At Harvard, he worked in moral philosophy and aesthetics with Profs. John Rawls, Stanley Cavell, and Martha Nussbaum.  He also holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law (1993).   He has published in moral philosophy, moral realism, aesthetics, political philosophy, and selected topics in philosophy of law. He has traveled extensively, especially in Southeast Asia, and for years has worked with the Cambodian Trust, an organization devoted to providing physical therapy for the landmine victims of Cambodia’s civil war. He also regularly teaches moral realism and moral theory at the CUNY Graduate Center.
