Areas of Research

Neuroendocrinology - the effects of hormones, stress and gonadal, on behavioral and neural function are studied.  Behaviors include learning and memory, anxiety and depression.  Neural properties investigated include morphology using Golgi techniques and monoamines and other neurotransmitters using chemical techniques.  We are also interested in sex differences in response to stress hormones.  Investigations include effects of gonadal hormones, estradiol and testosterone, on cognitive function, and their role in loss of function with aging.  Recent work has examined whether motherhood influences aging and cognitive function, and results show beneficial effects. Sex differences in the response to psychoactive drugs such as cocaine are also studied.
