Applying For Grants

Grant funding can be important to a faculty member’s professional career. Grant funding can be complex. Many faculty members may desire grant funding, but don’t know where to begin.

Before Applying for Grants

Before you begin searching for a grant to support your project, you must come up with a unique, fundable concept. As you work on researching and developing your concept, the Office of Research Administration can walk you through next steps as well as related policies and procedures.

Each researcher will find a specific set of opportunities that fits their individual needs, so deadlines and requirements will vary significantly from project to project.

Once your concept has been fleshed out, you can begin to survey the wide range of funding opportunities. Grants listed below are open to students, faculty, and staff.

Funding Opportunities

PSC-CUNY seeks to enhance the University's role as a research institution and further the professional growth and development of its faculty. The funding will support activities in the creative arts and all academically relevant research in the areas of natural science, social science, humanities, social work, nursing and education. The PSC–CUNY Grant Program is open to full–time members of the instructional staff.

Learn More About Internal Funding Opportunities

CUNY Office of Research provides a number of research--related internal funding programs to its faculty.

Internal funding programs include:

  • Junior Faculty Research Awards
  • Con Edison Social & Behavioral Research Award
  • Interdisciplinary Research Grant
  • Open Educational Resources Research Program

Today, the Grants.gov system houses information on over 1,000 grant programs and vets grant applications for federal grant-making agencies. The mission is to provide a common website for federal agencies to post discretionary funding opportunities and for grantees to find and apply to them.

How Do I Submit Grants?

If you are submitting a grant electronically, you must adhere to the Rule of Two.

Notify the Office of Research Administration, at least two weeks before the application deadline, to make an appointment to review the grant guidelines, determine the grant requirements, deadlines, submission plan, etc., and obtain a proposal routing form to secure endorsement from your Department Chair and Dean. The requirement is to manage workload and coordinate the scheduling of submissions as multiple proposals from Hunter College may have the same deadline.

Grant applications must be submitted at least two days before the deadline to address errors/warnings or to make any necessary changes. We also make this request because there may be several grants being submitted on a deadline and we must ensure that all grant submissions meet the deadline.

  1. Grant Proposal Routing Form
  2. Notice of Intent to Submit a Grant Application Form
  3. Clearance Policy for the Solicitation of Grants from Foundations, Corporations and Private Individuals
  • Grants.gov Information
Grants.gov provides a unified electronic ‘storefront’ for interactions between grant applicants and funding agencies. Hunter College is already registered in Grants.gov. There is nothing that a principal investigator (PI) must do in terms of institutional registration.
