Headshot of Dayanni Bhagwandin
Dayanni Bhagwandin
2017 Graduate, B.A. Chemistry (Biochemistry Concentration), German Minor

Where are you now?
PhD Candidate at UCLA, Chemistry & Biochemistry Department, Rubin Lab I work on synthesizing organic molecules for electronic applications.

What is one goal that you still aspire to reach?
I hope that one day I can start a program similar to Yalows and give students the community and support that they need to pursue a career in STEM.

What is one accomplishment that you wish to share about yourself?
I got to explain my science research to Tom Steyer. I love talking about science and learning about different ways to communicate it to a broader audience. Tom Steyer was visiting our campus to learn about current green science initiatives - and I got chosen to take him on a tour of my lab!

What was/is your best Yalow memory?
Rigorously studying organic chemistry in the basement of the library with my Yalow squad.

Frederick Yen
2019 Graduate, Biological Sciences and Special Honors Curriculum (Thomas Hunter Honors Program)

Where are you now?
I am currently a Research Assistant at The Rockefeller University and applying to MD-PhD programs as well.

What is one goal that you still aspire to reach?
I was actively involved in mentoring and teaching at Hunter and I look to continue doing so as I progress through my training. I hope to continue improving the skills necessary to be an effective mentor and educator. I have benefited from the amazing mentorship I have received over the years and I aspire to pay it forward.

What is one accomplishment that you wish to share about yourself?
During my free time, I enjoy powerlifting. Up until the pandemic, I had been training to compete in a competition later this year or early next year, but given the circumstances, I will have to hold off on that. I look forward to when I can start competing once again.

What was/is your best Yalow memory?
My best Yalow memory would be presenting at ABRCMS 2018. Through the program, a few of us Yalows were able to attend and to present our research at the conference. It was a great way to not only learn about the other amazing research my peers were conducting, but I got to connect with them regardless of cohort year. Overall, it was an amazing experience!

2019 Graduate, Human Biology (Track I: Mind, Body, Health) and minored in Asian American Studies

Where are you now?
I am currently a Master of Public Health candidate in Epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, Class of 2021.

What is one goal that you still aspire to reach?
After my MPH, I plan on attending medical school and utilize the skills I learned at Hunter and grad school to play a direct role in creating more equitable healthcare.

What is one accomplishment that you wish to share about yourself?
One of my proudest accomplishments is being a founding member as a Scholar Bridge peer leader and mentor. It allowed me to collaborate with students in the other scholar groups and helped with increasing student engagement and fostering community on campus.

What was/is your best Yalow memory?
My favorite Yalow memory was the trip to the 2018 AMSA Convention and Exposition in Washington DC. It was really insightful to network with several organizations and schools, attend interactive workshops, and watch my peers present their research.

Jack Liu
2016 Graduate, Chemistry BA, General Surgery Resident, NYC

What is one goal that you still aspire to reach?
Jack continuously aspires to be a role model for aspiring physicians.

What was/is your best Yalow memory?
Reflecting back to his days as a Yalow at Hunter College, Jack's favorite memory include the following: registering for classes, struggling to study in the library all year, and finally graduating as a Yalow scholar. One of the perks of as a Yalow scholar is being able to register for classes with limited number of seats one week earlier than the rest of the college—a true blessing. Studying together and supporting each other, Yalows are able to stay focused on their common goal of being future healthcare providers. And even after graduation, Yalows stay close-knitted and celebrate each others success year after year.

In the past, I have been denoted Best Delegate at various Model United Nations Conferences. Currently, I am published as first author in one abstract and one paper.

What was/is your best Yalow memory?
My favorite Yalow memory was hosting the first ever Yalow Awards night. It was a beautiful night with many wonderful moments. I loved being MC and seeing all the Yalow’s win their respective awards.
