Centro Town Hall - Self Determination for Puerto Rican Youth
Free Admission
Join us on Wednesday, March 16th, 2022 at 6:30 PM EST for a Town Hall - Puerto Rico pa les Nuestres. This town hall brings various young people fighting for social justice across the Puerto Rican archipelago to express the impact that years of colonialism and austerity have had on their lives and the lives of their fellow Puerto Ricans. The forum will touch on topics from the fight for fair wages to public access to the beaches. In addition, it will link these struggles with the right that Puerto Ricans have to a binding decolonization process that is open, democratic, and transparent.
Currently the Congress of the United States is evaluating two bills that deal with the issue of Status in Puerto Rico. The participants will speak to the duty that United States has to recognize the right to self-determination of the people of Puerto Rico. Self-determination is NOT about American civil rights. It is a matter of International Law to which the United States is subject. Congress must assume its historical, legal, and moral responsibility for the occupation of Puerto Rico.
The event "Centro Town Hall - Puerto Rico pa les Nuestres" will be recorded and broadcast live on Wednesday, March 16 at 6:30 pm (AST) on the digital media of the organizing entities: VAMOS Puerto Rico, Center for Popular Democracy, School of Political and Community Leadership, La Clara, and Open Society Policy Center The event is being planned in collaboration with Hunter College's Center for Puerto Rican Studies.
