About the McNulty Foundation

About the John P. and Anne Welsh McNulty Foundation

The McNulty Foundation inspires, develops and drives leaders to solve the most critical challenges of our time, supporting individuals at pivotal moments along their leadership journeys. We incubate emerging leaders through the McNulty Scholars programs, accelerating the careers of young women in STEM fields at Hunter College and Saint Joseph’s University, the Institute for Women’s Leadership at Villanova University, and the McNulty Leadership Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. We elevate breakthrough leaders through the McNulty Prize, an annual award given with the Aspen Institute to recognize moral courage, a vision for change, and a track record of bold and lasting impact.

anne-mcnultyAnne Welsh McNulty has invested more than $35 million in elevating entrepreneurial leaders and nurturing promising students as co-founder and president of the McNulty Foundation. A trailblazer for women in finance, Anne was a managing director of Goldman Sachs and a senior executive of the Goldman Sachs Hedge Fund Strategies Group.

Anne established the John P. McNulty Prize to recognize and support individuals successfully addressing barriers to health, education, and economic opportunity in their communities. She founded the McNulty Scholars programs at Hunter College and St. Joseph’s University, which propel young women to lead in STEM fields. She established the Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women’s Leadership at Villanova University and the McNulty Leadership Program at Wharton.

Anne serves on the Board of Trustees of the Aspen Institute, and on the Board of Overseers at the Wharton School. She is a former Trustee of Villanova University and a member of the Advisory Council for Harvard Kennedy School’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business & Government. She is on the Board of Directors for the Child Mind Institute and a Trustee of the American Academy in Rome, the Naples Children & Education Foundation, and NCH Healthcare.

Anne earned her MBA from the Wharton School, and was valedictorian of her graduating class at Villanova, where she also holds an honorary doctorate. She has been an Advanced Leadership Initiative Fellow at Harvard, and a Distinguished Careers Institute fellow at Stanford.

We are here thanks to many who came before us, like the MIT scientists in Kate Zernike’s The Exceptions, and the exceptional women scientists at Hunter, like Dr. Mildred Dresselhaus, Dr. Rosalyn Yalow, Dr. Gertrude Elion, and many others. And now we celebrate another milestone in Hunter’s rich legacy of extraordinary leaders in science. I could not be more honored to be associated with this historic institution, and the work and brilliance of Dr. Mandë Holford, who has relentlessly pushed forward knowledge, scientific research, and leadership in her field.

It’s hard to determine exactly how many named chairs exist across the American academy, but we know that few are awarded to women, and even fewer are named after women. Now, the ranks of both categories have grown slightly, as Dr. Holford becomes the inaugural Anne Welsh McNulty Chair of Science Innovation and Leadership at Hunter.

Since 2010, my foundation has collaborated with the college to accelerate the leadership of talented undergraduate women in STEM fields through funding, research opportunities, mentorship, and community with the John P. McNulty Scholars Program for Leadership and Science. I learned in my own career navigating the male-dominated world of finance that women breaking through is not a mere pipeline problem; it requires an ecosystem of support, mentorship, and opportunities.

I invite you all to consider those who made your own story possible, whether by breaking down barriers or simply by supporting you and to consider what we can do to support those who come after us. More immediately, I invite you to join in this celebration of Dr. Holford, Hunter’s commitment to the sciences, and the work of all the brilliant minds gathered here at Hunter College.
