Hunter Students during commencement

Student Spotlight

It’s commencement season! On January 27, the Hunter College Class of Winter 2021 graduates celebrated Hunter’s 222nd Commencement virtually!

View President Raab’s charge to graduates, where viewers can hear the inspiring stories of extraordinary Hunter students such as Rachel Bodekl, who was an avid reader before becoming legally blind at 13. The mother of twin boys, one of whom is also blind, Rachel earned an MA in education for the visually impaired. Or Sungjae Park, who at 19 moved from rural South Korea to New York. He then served for four years as a medic in the U.S. Army, before enrolling at Hunter.  Sungjae has now graduated with a BA in human biology and has been accepted to seven medical schools.

We are thrilled to announcement that the Class of Winter 2021 includes three valedictorians.  We congratulate Marcelle Cohen, Florence Deutsch, and Adam Berri on their exceptional academic achievements and welcome them—and all of the recent graduates—to the Hunter Alumni family. View remarks from each of the valedictorians.

As we celebrate the achievements of our winter 2021 graduates, we also recognize the deep impact that COVID-19 has had on their lives and we honor the extraordinary perseverance it took to earn a degree in the midst of a global pandemic. View some of their stories.

Alumni Highlights

Lift Off, a new sculpture by famed artist and Alice Aycock (MA ‘71), will soon greet motorists at Des Moines International Airport! The work will be installed permanently outside the airport in fall 2021. Read more about the installation.

"Bridge and Tunnel," the new Epix series created by actor, director, and Hunter College alumn Edward Burns, revolves around six recent college graduates from Long Island trying to make their way in life and New York City, much like Burns himself once did (with a little help from Hunter!) View The New York Times article about “Bridge and Tunnel”.

Faculty Features

Hunter College Distinguished Professor Saïd Sayrafiezadeh’s forthcoming collection of stories, American Estrangement, is among Literary Hub's "Most Anticipated Books of 2021." Out in August, it is already a summer must read. One reviewer calls its stories "...intimate, often slyly funny...always marked by a deep, imaginative sympathy."  View the Literary Hub list.

Hunter Celebrates Black History Month

As we celebrate Black History Month at Hunter, we’re proud to highlight some of our most distinguished alumni—scientists, artists, activists—all brilliant, all barrier breakers. Starting on February 18, The Presidential Task Force on Racial Equity at Hunter College will sponsor a series of events focusing on the work and life of alumna Audre Lorde (HCHS '51 HC ’59)—"Audre Lorde Now: A Community Read-in for Our Survival". See more information on the Spring 2021 series.

We also invite you to join us online at Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College for "Remembering Mayor David N. Dinkins: The Lessons and the Legacy". Click here for more information and to register for these and other featured events this month at Roosevelt House.

Hunter@Home - The Scaffold Effect

February 25, 2021 | 6:30 pm

Are you a parent struggling with supporting and empowering your children during the pandemic?

Join us for a special event with child psychiatrist, Harold Koplewicz and Hunter Professor Tracy Dennis-Tiwary as they discuss Dr. Koplewicz’s latest book, The Scaffold Effect. Just as sturdy scaffolding is necessary when erecting a building and will come down when the structure grows stable, good parenting provides children with steady and warm emotional nourishment on the path toward independence. Never-ending parental problem-solving and involvement can have the opposite effect, enabling fragility and anxiety over time.

Hunter@Home - Walking with Ghosts

March 9, 2021 | 6:00 pm

Please join us for a special evening with Gabriel Byrne and Colum McCann as they discuss Byrne's highly anticipated memoir, Walking with Ghosts.

As a young boy growing up in the outskirts of Dublin, Gabriel Byrne sought refuge in a world of imagination among the fields and hills near his home, at the edge of a rapidly encroaching city. A friend suggested Byrne join an amateur drama group, a decision that would change his life forever and launch him on an extraordinary forty-year career in film and theatre.

Support

This month, we joyfully turn our thoughts to February 14, 1870, the day Hunter opened its doors to its first incoming class, a pioneering cohort of bright, hopeful women, many of them of modest means and from immigrant families.

And now, 151 years later, we are deeply gratified to realize how far Hunter has come—educating nearly 18,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students each year.  Hunter students' commitment to their studies powerfully demonstrates that, even during a pandemic, the Hunter family continues to pursue the aspirations reflected in our historic motto, Mihi Cura Futuri, "The Care of the Future if Mine."

As the COVID19 pandemic continues, students' requests for tuition assistance, mental health counseling, and emergency grants to support rent, food, and medical bills, continue to rise.  Now more than ever we rely on caring individuals like you to help support our college, and our students.

As we look to a brighter tomorrow, please consider making a gift to Hunter in support of our students. Thanks to your generosity, their dreams will still become reality.
