Application Requirements

Applying to Hunter College as an international student requires careful planning to ensure all materials are submitted on time. We strongly encourage starting your application early, as additional steps like credential evaluation and visa processing may require extra time.

Before starting your application for one of our graduate programs, please review the General Application Requirements and the checklist below for the required steps to complete and submit your application. As an international student, there are a few additional admission requirements to keep in mind to ensure your application is complete and processed efficiently. Note that you can apply to only one program per semester.

Review General Application Requirements

Hunter College requires you to scan and upload transcripts from all college, university, and/or post-secondary institutions you have attended, including graduate and undergraduate institutions where you earned (or will earn) a degree, studied for one semester or more, and/or study abroad. When applying to a graduate degree program at Hunter College, except for the Silberman School of Social Work, copies of original academic transcripts (in the native language) must be submitted and show the dates of enrollment; the subjects or courses taken; the units, credits or time allotted to each subject per term or year; marks or rating in each subject and, if rank is determined, rank in the total class or group. Evidence of conferral of all degrees, diplomas or professional titles must also be submitted.

Applicants who have attended a college/university outside the US are required to submit:

  • copies of the original academic transcripts
  • proof of degree conferral
  • course-by-course evaluation report

If these documents are issued in a language other than English, they must be submitted with authorized, complete and exact English translations.

Hunter College requires that applicants submit course-by-course evaluation reports of their non-US studies by one of the following private evaluation services listed below. Evaluations of academic transcripts can serve as English translations.

  • Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute, Inc.
  • Education Credential Evaluation Inc.
  • Evaluation Service Inc.
  • Foreign Credential Evaluations, Inc.
  • International Education Evaluations (IEE)
  • Josef Silny & Associates Inc., International Education Consultants  – Foreign Credential Evaluation Application Hunter College CUNY- Graduate
  • Scholaro
  • SpanTran: The Evaluation Company
  • World Evaluation Services, Inc.

If your documents are issued in a language other than English, they must be submitted with an authorized, complete and exact English translation. Evaluations of academic transcripts can also serve as English translations.

Official translations may be obtained from the following

  • Consulate or embassy of the country that is issuing the document
  • Translation agency
  • Immigrant or refugee association in the U.S. representing the country issuing the document
  • The institution where the student studied
  • Faculty member of U.S. high school, college, or university (must signify his/her academic department and rank)

All translations must meet the following conditions

  • Complete and literal (word-for-word) with no attempts to interpret or evaluate the credential
  • Prepared in same format as the original document
  • Typed on business or school letterhead stationery
  • Signed by a translator attesting to familiarity with the foreign language

CUNY does not accept translations from the following

  • The student or members of his/her family
  • Individuals not affiliated with any of the organizations listed above

Applicants whose native language is not English and whose post-secondary education was in a country where English is not the native language must present Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores. Admission is offered only to those students who are fully prepared in English as demonstrated by the TOEFL or IELTS.

Applications for students who are required to submit Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) will not be considered without the test scores.

The following minimum scores must be obtained:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Administered Test: 233 (Visit TOEFL for more information.)
  • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score (Visit IELTS for more information.)

Please refer to the specific graduate program webpage to verify if the graduate degree program you wish to apply to requires TOEFL/IELTS scores that are higher than the College’s minimum requirement.
