Program Overview

PhD in Nursing

This post-master's PhD degree in Nursing prepares nurse scientists to conduct research that supports health equity by addressing the health of diverse, urban individuals; families; and communities.

PhD in Nursing

The PhD in Nursing program requires completion of 50 credits

The PhD in Nursing program at the Hunter College School of Nursing is a 50-credit program that can be completed in 3 years.

  • Courses are offered on a part-time plan (2-3 courses per term, including winter intersession and summer session), all scheduled on the same day. This allows for a rich scholarly experience that also works well for many working professionals.
  • All students complete a 360-hour research residency with an individual research mentor during the first 2 years of the program.
  • Students have the option of taking two courses in nursing education, including a teaching residency.

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • A master's degree from an accredited program with a minimum GPA of 3.5
  • A degree in nursing (baccalaureate and/or master's degree).
  • New York State RN license and current registration.
  • Completion of a graduate-level statistics course in the last 5 years with a grade of B or better.
  • Previous coursework in graduate-level research methods.
  • A current curriculum vitae or professional résumé.
  • Three letters of recommendation. These letters are an important part of the admissions process. They should be from individuals who can address your potential for success in graduate studies and in the advanced role you have chosen.
  • A written statement of: Career goals, including reason for interest in Hunter College. Description of a proposed area of research, including research interests that match faculty expertise.
  • Writing sample that reflects your writing ability, preferably a graduate research paper on a topic related to your proposed area of interest.
  • Satisfactory interview

Conduct research on diverse healthcare topics, publish findings, and contribute to the advancement of nursing knowledge. Salary Range: $60,000 - $120,000

Translate research findings into clinical practice, improve patient outcomes through evidence-based interventions, and lead clinical trials. Salary Range: $80,000 - $150,000

Oversee all nursing operations in a healthcare facility, ensure quality patient care, manage budgets, and lead nursing staff. Salary range: $100,000 - $200,000

Utilize expertise in nursing, research, and leadership to fill high-level executive roles in healthcare organizations, influencing policy and strategy. Salary Range: $120,000 - $250,000

Teach future nurses at universities or colleges, mentor students, develop curriculum, and conduct research. Salary Range: $80,000 - $150,000

Secure funding for research projects in nursing and healthcare through writing grants and proposals. Salary Range: $70,000 - $130,000

Analyze healthcare policies, provide recommendations for improvement, and advise policymakers on health-related issues. Salary Range: $80,000 - $150,000

Implement and manage healthcare information systems, ensure data security, and design innovative technology solutions for patient care. Salary Range: $80,000 - $140,000

Lead public health initiatives, develop programs to address community health needs, and promote healthy living in diverse populations. Salary Range: $90,000 - $180,000

How to Apply

Students Educated Outside the US

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
  • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
