2024-25 FAFSA Changes

The 2024-25 FAFSA form redesigns how students and their families use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. As a reminder, we recommend that all Hunter students file the FAFSA as early as possible.

Here’s a glance at what to expect:
  • A Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID (account username and password) is required to access the FAFSA form.
  • Users without a Social Security number can create an FSA ID and access the FAFSA form.
  • Students and families will also be able to complete paper forms by downloading a PDF form and mailing it to the US Department of Education.
  • The New FAFSA replaces the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) with the Student Aid Index (SAI).
  • Students may use the estimator tool before completing the new FAFSA.

Introducing: Contributors

The new FAFSA includes the introduction of contributors to form. A contributor is defined as a Parent, Other Parent, Student Spouse, and/or Student.

  • Dependent students must invite their parent(s) to contribute to their form if parent information is required.
  • Independent students and a dependent student’s parent must invite their spouse to contribute to the student’s form if spouse information is required.
  • Students and contributors must provide consent to retrieve and disclose federal tax information from the IRS for the student to be eligible for federal student aid.

Contributors must provide the required information and sign their respective section for a FAFSA form to be considered complete and will require consent from users to

  • retrieve and disclose federal tax information,
  • be eligible for federal student aid, and
  • be eligible to receive an SAI (formerly known as the EFC).
