Responsible Conduct of Research

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

CUNY requires training in the responsible conduct of research by all researchers. Instructions on completing training through the CITI Program can be found on CUNY CITI Training. In addition, research funded by departments such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF) have specific requirements regarding training in responsible conduct of research. Please note that this training is separate from human subjects training required for submissions to the Institutional Review Board (IRB).

If you are a CUNY faculty member, staff member, postdoctoral scholar, graduate student, or undergraduate student involved in research at Hunter College, then you are required to complete the CITI training within six weeks of initiating your research. CUNY researchers are required to take a refresher training course every four years. Please take the time to review the policy on training in the responsible conduct of research to ensure that you are compliant with both the institution's and your funder's policies.

Please submit your Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) CITI certificate via the form:

Research Misconduct

The RIO is responsible for promoting the responsible conduct of research through training and education at the college and for implementing CUNY's research misconduct policy.

The core tenets for responsible conduct of research include honest, trustworthy, reliable, and accountable behavior practices developed to promote high quality research. It is important that all researchers in the community are aware of the following when considering research integrity in their study's development:

  • Mentor/Trainee responsibilities
  • Data acquisition, management, sharing, & ownership
  • Peer review
  • Publication practices & responsible authorship
  • Collaborative science
  • Research misconduct
