PROFILE
As a distinguished lecturer in Classical and Oriental Studies at Hunter College and director of the Master of Arts in Translating and Interpretation program, Julie Tay works closely with colleagues in the Chinese, Spanish and Russian study units to ensure a cohesive and rewarding learning experience for students.
She oversees and coordinates every aspect of marketing and promotion of the Master of Arts in Translating and Interpretation program as well as curriculum content and delivery. Ms. Tay works with the admissions and scheduling teams to coordinate related administrative processes including student application, acceptance, enrollment, as well as the appointment and on boarding of adjunct instructors.
Prior to joining Hunter’s faculty, Ms. Tay served as the first academic director of New York University’s MS in Translation (2014-2017), and spent three decades serving as a practicing translator/interpreter and community organizer in NYC.
She is a founder and sitting board member of Mencius Society for the Arts, a 16-year-old local community arts organization devoted to the advance and education of Chinese language and culture. Along with receiving multiple NEA and NYSCA grants for performing arts and translation projects, Ms. Tay was named as a multi-year (2020-2022) organizational grantee of the ALAANA NYC Community Trust Funds.
She is currently pursuing her PhD in linguistics from Lancaster University in Lancashire, England.
