Our school’s history began as the Hunter College Model School in 1870 as a teacher-training resource and was restructured in 1941 as Hunter College Elementary School for intellectually talented and gifted students. For over 80 years, HCES has been a model for gifted education. We pride ourselves on providing a safe, positive learning environment with a rigorous instructional program that meets the needs of our students. We value and foster respect for diversity, and create a community of inclusion for our students and families.

The School of Education faculty, staff and students make significant contributions to lives of individuals, families and communities. Graduates of our programs assume roles of responsibility and leadership in PreK-12 classrooms, schools and school districts, research and policy centers, and community agencies. By using reflective practice and translating research into action, they are prepared to guide the academic, social and emotional development of children, adolescents and adults.
Visit The School of EducationHunter’s Institute of Health Sciences, dedicated to the educational preparation of a range of health care professions, opened its doors on East 106th Street in 1968. Six years later, the Institute became the School of Health Sciences and moved downtown to the Brookdale Campus. In 2014, the name was changed to the School of Health Professions. Today the School’s mission is the education of the next generation of health care professionals in the areas of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Physical Therapy. These professionals will work in health care centers, schools, organizations and private practice to improve the lives of those they assist through direct service delivery, research and education.
