FAQ

Generally, Hunter graduates approximately 3,000 candidates each Commencement.

The length of the ceremony can vary, but it is generally about three hours.

You may participate in Commencement if you need six (6) or fewer credits to complete your degree requirement, plan to complete your coursework by the end of the Summer sessions, and have applied for graduation with the Registrar’s Office by the Graduation Application Filing Period deadline for Summer.

Participation Eligibility Information

Our high number of graduates participating in the Commencement Ceremony always makes our ceremonies lively, memorable and extremely well attended. However, to accommodate this high number of attendees, our students are acknowledged and graduated in groups (by school).

No, don't wait! Be sure to RSVP by the appropriate eligibility deadline in order to receive your four (4) Guest Tickets and have your name listed in the Commencement Program. See Participation Eligibility for more information.

Yes, in order to accommodate at least four (4) guests per graduation candidate, all children must have a Guest Ticket for entry. Infants and/or toddlers who can remain on an adult's lap will be allowed entry with an accompanying Guest Ticket-holding parent/guardian. Please be advised that security will enforce this policy.

Hunter College cannot arrange for entrance to the United States. However, you may email us at commencement@hunter.cuny.edu to obtain a letter stating that you are a candidate for graduation and that you will be attending the commencement ceremony. You must provide the US Consulate address for the city and country where your guest will be applying for a visitor's visa, your guest's name, address, passport number and relationship to you. Only the student graduating, with appropriate identification, may obtain this letter.

You may obtain a Degree Audit Application Status letter showing that you have applied for graduation from the Office of the Registrar. The Commencement Program will be distributed to students and guests at the Ceremony.

No, balloons and/or other objects that may obstruct the view of others are not allowed inside the auditorium/hall.

Still have another question?

Email the Commencement Committee at commencement@hunter.cuny.edu.
