MA in Spanish

Program Overview

The master’s degree in Spanish provides opportunities for professional advancement in teaching and professional fields that require a good knowledge of other languages and cultures. It is also a means of intellectual development for those who want to expand their knowledge in the humanities.

Master Arts (MA) in Spanish

You must complete a total of 30 credits to receive an MA in Spanish.

The following is required for completion of the MA in Spanish:

  • Coursework: A total of 30 credits from the Literature of Specialization including a Thesis Seminar (3cr) for those students electing to write a master’s essay.
  • Languages: In addition to a high degree of competence in the language of specialization, candidates must demonstrate a reading knowledge of a second Romance language, German, or Latin.
  • Comprehensive Examination: Candidates must pass a written examination on the field of study, in the language of specialization.
  • (Optional) Master’ s Essay: Topic is determined in consultation with the principal adviser. Thesis Seminar, to be taken concurrently with preparation of the essay, is completed when the essay is approved be the principal adviser and another faculty member.

You must meet the following minimum requirements in order to be considered for admission. Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the program.

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • An undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • 18 credits of upper level undergraduate courses in Spanish literature. Where general scholarship is superior, but the applicant did not major in the field, or preparation in that field is deemed to be insufficient, an examination and/or enrollment in specific undergraduate courses will be required. Before matriculation, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the language of specialization.
  • Two letters of recommendation from appropriate academic or professional references
  • A statement of purpose of approximately 500 words describing your objectives in undertaking graduate study
  • An academic writing sample of about 10 pages (usually an undergraduate research paper)
  • Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test*

*The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is currently waived for both the incoming Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 class.

How to Apply

Students Educated Outside the US

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have taken all or part of their undergraduate education in a country where English is not the native language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The following minimum scores must be obtained:

  • TOEFL iBT: 80/ Paper Based Test: 550/ Computer Based Test: 213
  • IELTS: 6.5 Overall Band Score
