FAQ

No, the Career Center does not post positions from third-party staffing agencies.

We will not post positions requiring students to pay special fees, purchase training materials, or participate in multi-level marketing as a preliminary condition of employment.

Employers are responsible for ensuring their job or internship description is an accurate reflection of the duties of the position.

Federal laws prohibit job discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age, equal pay and disability. These guidelines are available from The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In addition, The New York City Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination based on gender (including gender identity and sexual harassment), sexual orientation, martial status, and partnership status. As part of CUNY, Hunter College also adheres to The City University of New York Non-Discrimination Policy, which "is committed to engendering values and implementing policies that will enhance respect for individuals and their cultures." CDS will not post positions which do not adhere to any of these non-discriminatory guidelines.

Employers will offer students a safe and appropriate work environment for students. A private home is not considered appropriate for internships, part time jobs, or full time jobs.

It is suggested that employers list their internship opportunities at least six (6) weeks prior to the designated start date in order that there be adequate time  for students to apply, be interviewed, notified as well as contact their faculty supervisor and register for academic credit before the registration period closes.

Unpaid internships follow a semester time frame where students must receive academic credit for their participation.

  • Fall semester: Internships begin early September and ends mid-December
  • Spring semester: Internships begin early February and end mid-May
  • Summer: 8-12 weeks between June and August

Paid internships follow a similar time table but can continue beyond the semester. Paid internships must pay at least minimum wage per hour.

For OCR positions, the Career Center is committed to working in the best interest of both our students and our employer partners. We encourage employers to be understanding and willing to give students ample time to carefully consider all of their employment options and to make informed decisions during the recruiting season. In an effort to establish a fair, competitive and ethical recruiting environment for both students and employers, the Career Center requires employers to follow the following OCR offer and date guidelines.

In some cases, students may ask for extensions beyond these recommended deadlines, and we hope you will be able to accommodate their requests. Additionally, please note that for continuity purposes, these policies may apply to positions that are non-OCR if other divisions or your respective company participate in on-campus recruiting.

If you extend a full-time job or a returning summer internship offer to a student prior to the start of the Fall semester, we request that you give that student until mid-October to give you their decision.

Full Time

If you extend a full-time job offer to a student during fall recruiting after the start of the Fall semester, we would prefer that you give students until the end of November to give you their decision and we require you to give students a minimum of three (3) weeks to make the decision.

Internship

If you extend an internship offer to a student during fall recruiting after the start of the Fall semester, we would prefer that you give students until the end of November to give you their decision and we require you to give students a minimum of four (4) weeks to make the decision.

Note, the four (4) weeks applies to all internship offers made prior to the start of the Spring semester, including those made during the winter intersession.
