Practice Interview Questions

The following is a short list of questions you can practice with as you prepare for your interview. While you will not know in advance what an employer might ask, drafting responses to interview questions is a practical method to be ready for your interview.

  • Describe what you think this job entails and what you might like and dislike about the work.
  • Describe your goals for this internship program and how this experience will be helpful for your career aspirations.
  • Tell us what you know about our company and why this organization would be a good fit for you.
  • Tell us about your greatest strength and how you applied that strength to solve a problem.
  • Tell us about a mistake you might have made. What did that mistake help you to learn and what would you do differently?
  • Consider the following scenario: An obviously annoyed customer is frustrated and unhappy with product or service. How would you respond?
  • Describe a conflict you’ve had with other staff members and how you resolved it.
  • Tell me about a time when you saw room for improvement in some area of your work environment or a process that could be more efficient. What did you do to change the status quo?
  • Describe an occasion when you had two bosses ask you to do conflicting tasks. How did you handle this dilemma?
  • Describe a time when your supervisor or a co-worker asked you to help out and doing so required extra work outside your established responsibilities or staying later than you anticipated. What did you do, and how did you feel?
  • Tell me about a time when your job required you to perform a task that you didn’t know how to do. How did you respond?
  • While at work, a co-worker complains to you about an employees and some of the office policies and procedures, concluding with ‘Don’t you think so too?’ How would you respond?
  • Tell me about your experience with MS Office programs, particularly, Excel.

Questions for the Employer

You should always come prepared to ask at least 2 to 3 questions during the interview. In this process, you are evaluating if company and job is the right fit for you. Asking questions helps you learn more about the position and assess the company culture. Asking questions also shows interest in the company and the role.

  • What specific projects would I be focusing on?
  • How is performance evaluated?
  • What skills do you feel are particularly important for someone in this position?
  • Will I be expected or allowed to take further education for this position?
  • Who would be my direct supervisor?
  • Could you tell me a little about the training program for new employees?
  • Are there any staff development opportunities?
