What’s on the ESL test?
The Accuplacer ESL test has five sections. Here’s what to expect:
- WritePlacer ESL (Essay Writing) – You'll have 60 minutes to write an essay (at least 300 words) based on a short statement and question. Your response should clearly express your opinion and include reasons and examples to support it.
- Reading Skills – This untimed section has 20 multiple-choice questions based on short reading passages. You’ll answer questions about the passage’s meaning and details.
- Language Use – In this untimed section, you’ll answer 20 multiple-choice questions that test grammar and sentence structure. You’ll fill in blanks with the correct word or phrase and combine sentences effectively.
- Listening – This untimed section has 20 multiple-choice questions where you’ll listen to conversations on different topics and answer questions about them.
- Sentence Meaning – In this untimed section, you’ll answer 20 multiple-choice questions that test your understanding of sentence structure and meaning.
Scoring & Placement
- A composite score of 105 or higher means you meet CUNY’s English proficiency requirements and can enroll in a college-level English course.
- A score below 105 means you’ll be placed in an ESL course that matches your skill level.
