Jonathan Shannon is a professor in the Department of Anthropology.

Profile

Dr. Jonathan Shannon is a professor in the Department of Anthropology. He teaches courses in the anthropology of music and the arts, as well as Middle East studies, food, culture and politics.

Dr. Shannon is a Guggenheim fellow and has authored two influential monographs on Middle Eastern music. His research focuses on musical cultures of the Arab world and Mediterranean with a special focus on Syria, Morocco and Spain. Dr. Shannon's more recent research focuses on the music of Syrian refugees in Turkey, Germany and Sweden.

As a performer, Dr. Shannon's musical skills inform his research practice which he carries through to his teaching. He enjoys teaching and mentoring students, as well as writing, and credits his students for continuously inspiring him to be a better mentor and scholar.

Dr. Shannon received his PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center.
