UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

Anthropology at Hunter College offers courses in four fields: cultural anthropology, archaeology, linguistic anthropology and biological anthropology (historically called physical anthropology). All four fields are included in the major, and students choose major electives to concentrate in a particular field.

In addition to the major, we offer five distinct minors: the general anthropology minor, which includes one introductory class from each field, and a minor dedicated to each field.

"Not only did my studies better prepare me to succeed in grad school, they also helped shape the way I see the world. I learned how to think critically about all sorts of social and political issues and started to free myself of my preconceived notions about other cultures."

David Kanbergs, anthropology major and Thomas Hunter Honors graduate '17

ANTHROPOLOGY BA & HONORS

The major is comprised of 25 credits (seven three-credit classes and one four-credit class with a lab), drawing from all four fields of anthropology. Core courses include an introduction to each of the four fields, a seminar in research methods and a history of anthropological theory. In addition, students select three elective courses (or more) to complete their major and focus on a particular topic or area of interest. Many core and elective anthropology courses fulfill requirements in the CUNY Pathways and Hunter General Education requirement. See “Courses” for more information about this and about elective seminars.

Archaeology, Linguistic, and Cultural Anthropology courses are listed in the Hunter Catalog under “ANTHC – Cultural Anthropology.” Biological Anthropology courses are listed under “ANTHP – Physical Anthropology.”

Core Introductory Courses

  • ANTHC 10100 – Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
  • ANTHP 10100 – Human Evolution (four-credit class with lab)
  • ANTHC 12600 – Introduction to Prehistoric Archaeology
  • ANTHC 15100 – Introduction to Linguistics

Methods & Theory

  • ANTHC 31400 – Research Design
  • ANTHC 31800 – History of Anthropological Theory

Senior Thesis Option

  • ANTHC 40000 – Honors Project
  • Students with a major GPA of 3.5 or higher can earn departmental honors after successful completion of a senior thesis based on advised research.

ANTHROPOLOGY MINORS

Minors are primarily intended for non-majors, but may also be selected as an additional credential to complement a major. An anthropology minor consists of four or more classes and provides the opportunity to focus on one of the four fields of anthropology or to receive a broad introduction to the whole discipline.

  • Minor in Cultural Anthropology
  • Minor in Anthropology Linguistics
  • Minor in Middle East Studies
  • Minor in Physical Anthropology
  • Minor in General Anthropology
  • Minor in Archaeology
