Ming-Ying Li is a lecturer in Chinese Studies. She also serves as a doctoral lecturer for the Chinese Flagship Overseas Capstone Program in Taiwan.

Profile

Ming-Ying Li is a doctoral lecturer of Chinese in the Department of Classical and Oriental Studies. She also serves as assistant director of Chinese Flagship Overseas Capstone Program in Taiwan.

She holds a Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Language, Culture and Society from Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to Hunter College, Ming-Ying Li taught Chinese language courses at Pennsylvania State University and University of Colorado Boulder.

Dr. Li's main areas of interest are language teaching, curriculum design, and program development. Ming-Ying Li's primary research area is teaching and learning Chinese as a heritage language with a focus on literacy development. Of her work, she is most proud of helping students learn foreign languages ​​to change themselves and the world.

Dr. Ming-Ying Li teaches several Chinese Studies courses at Hunter, including:

  • CHIN 102: Elementary Chinese 2
  • CHIN 201: Intermediate Chinese 1
  • CHIN 202: Intermediate Chinese 2
  • CHIN 301: Journalistic Chinese Lit 1
  • CHIN 401: Chinese for the Global Workforce

Chinese Flagship Program

Assistant Project Director

Dr. Li holds a Ph.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Language, Culture and Society from Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to Hunter College, she taught Chinese language courses at Pennsylvania State University and University of Colorado Boulder. At Hunter College since 2017, she co-designed and taught an innovative course Chinese for the Global Workforce funded by City University of New York (CUNY) to combine advanced-level language studies with internship opportunities. In addition to teaching, she serves as the outreach coordinator for the Hunter Chinese Flagship program. With a strong research background, Dr. Li is key in supervising undergraduate Flagship students’ honors theses and graduate-level research projects for M.A. students. Her primary research area is teaching and learning Chinese as a heritage language with a focus on literacy development. She collaborated with the National Language Resource Center at CUNY to study writing proficiency outcomes and characteristics of college-level Chinese heritage learners.
